Battle Report - Double Feature

Hello All,

Got some more gaming done, so time for some more battle reports. This week was Star Wars X-Wing and a small introductory game of 40k. I figure both will be short so I can put them together.

X-Wing: Imperial vs Scum

So standard outer space game but with new 3-D asteroids. I wanted to try different shops so went with 2 tie bombers with bombs a defender and a fighter to fill points. The scum took boba fett and a bunch of cheap tough ships.

Advancing into range.

The first fire happens and boba fett almost kills a bomber right out. Not having shields is bad. Some other pot shots happen with the Tue defender doing alright bring a couple of shields down.

Next turn things get complicated and there's a bit of a scrum. But my first bomber goes down.

Next turn time for bombs. My bomber drops a proton bomb. But it ends up blowing right away and catches 2 of my ships and 1 scum!

Next turn and another bomb. This one feels much better. I actually kind of like the bombs. My ships are getting cut to shreds thou. I took out 1 scum ship but the tie fighter is lost. Things looking grim.

Fett finishes the bomb who was flying straight and slow due to a power crit. Just the defender left now.

But he is eventually worn down.

A solid scum victory.

Warhammer 40k: Tau vs Imperial Guard

On to the next game, this one was on Sunday. On of my colleagues expressed some interest in 40k so we set up a demo game I guess.

Were playing a Moddle Earth game on Wednesdsy so u set up the terrain to be good for both.

We drew open war cards and got capture the artifact at night. So who ever controls the doodad in the middle at the 3rd of turn 5 wins. But line of sight is severely reduced.

Turn 1 I advanced and captured the thing. Expecting to take little fire due to night.

Turns out  guy in range let's everyone shoot now. Also the Tau were shooting on point, so almost all of my storm troopers were killed.

Tine for revenge. So my 8nfantry shot them charged the kronor killing them all! The Commissar charged the stealth guys but no effect sadly.

Tau consolidated the point and got to work killing guardsmen.

Soon it was the commander vs a Tau unit on close combat. He beat up z few of them but next turn they got wise and fell back and shot him all up.

So a win for the Tau sadly. We were z bit sketchy on the rules. Realized after the game I had the rule book, so guess I should read that and get the new guard book. Or maybe check if I already have it...

Thanjs for reading. Kind of want to paint more 40k stuff now, hmmm...

Thanks;
Mike

; 2018Year End Review

Hello Folks,

Finally getting around to doing the classic new years post. A couple of weeks late but that's ok. As how these things usually go here were the years goals:

  1. Paint everything to run an Osgiliath game at Cangames.
  2. Paint everything to run a the Fords of the River Isen battle at Cangames.
  3. Paint a new By Fire and Sword army.
  4. Paint enough stuff including terrain to play some 7TV.
  5. Paint enough stuff to play a different Epic Army at Cold Wars.

I was a bit optimistic this year it seems. I never quite mdae my Lord of the Rings goals, as the plan transitioned into a Helms Deep game, but I did get everything we needed for that done so maybe we can call that a win. By Fire and Sword never happened, not 7TV but they are still on my list. Epic I did a few new stands to use a Battle Sisters army but not allot. So not great on goal keeping overall hah.

Ah Well here's a few shots of what DID get done!

Helms Deep Armies:

Some Nice Terrain:

Some Khorne Guys:

New Team Yankee Stuff:

Jovian Wars:

More Infinity:

Game of Thrones:

Pirates:

Ghosts:

Looks like more fantasy and sci-fi stuff than historical this year which is interesting. Maybe that will change for the next year who knows.

SO then plans for next year:

  1. Paint everything some Newfoundland themed pirate or Avalon Peninsula at Cangames.
  2. Paint a couple of small Warmaster armies.
  3. Paint a couple of new Lord of the Rings armies.
  4. Finish the Game of Thrones stuff

Last item is the pledge status, not so great this year, ended up a bit behind. Also a bit lower on the painting numbers. I think that is a bit about changing how things were counted. But seems like around 400 is about what can be done in a good year.

Pledge Status, 2018:

Bought: 406
Painted: 342
Total: -64

Historic Results:
2017: 441 Painted
2016: 484 Painted
2015: 216 Painted
2014: 140 Painted

Anyway hopefully everyone had a good year, on to the next now!

Thanks;
Mike

Battle Report - Cruel Seas

Hello All,

This past Sunday at the club day I got a chance to try out Cruel Seas, the new WW2 Naval game from Warlord games. The hook for this one is that it is all about small boat actions, MTBs and the like.

Game 1: Ambush

First we played a very small scenario with a pair of MTBs trying to sink a merchant tanker defenses by an E-Boat.

The British torpedo boats power up and head in to attack. But are immediately cut off by the German boat coming in to block.

The boats ignore the Germans and slip past to torpedo the tanker, launching q from the lead ship.

Next turn the torpedo hits its target and is a live hit doing significant damage. The Herman boat is easily able to sink 1 of the MTBs. However the other is able to hold on and fired its guns into the stern of the tanker finishing it off. So a win for the British.

Game 2: Boats Attack

For the second game we decided to just use everything we had painted, and John and Steve joined the game so we had 4. We just wanted to try stuff so the scenario was just sink or swim, and we left the tanker by the island as terrain.

Turn one and all boats move to attack. The Germans broke around the island but we massed more on the south side. Hoping to over power John's ships and swing around.

Turn 2 8 broke 2 boats north to delay Duncan, while we kept up the pressure on John. But things immediately went bad. Two ships sunk so that is a bad start. The Herman's boats can be lethal it seems

Next turn the exchange continues.  I lost the other ship I sent to Duncan so that split was clearly a bad idea. We also had a collision. The Germans rammed one of our boats accidently.

Then we have to swing around the island of an attack. But the Germans had some lethal luck and both of our ships were sunk.

So game over, no Germans sunk but a couple of them have good ammounts of damage.

By way of review this is a very simple game. Uses the same activation mechanics as bolt action (draw dice from bag), and rolling a d10 to hit and some d6 for damage.

It is quite fun thou, maybe I am just into the boats them but it's a fast and easy game and fast and easy to paint a force. The models are a bit different from the usual fare so I am into it for sure.

Thanks;
Mike

Last Painting Update 2018

Hello All,

Busy Christmas time is now over, so time for the final blog posts. First I am going to show off the last bits of stuff I got finished in December, maybe not as much as I had hoped due to allot of travelling. Then in a few days I will do the usual end of year post. A bit delayed but I don't see that as a big deal.

First up is a bunch of stuff I finished for the Age of Sigmar tournament as previously posted.

Spirit Hosts:

So I need some new stuff to make it to 1000 points for the tournament. With not much time I decided the easiest route would be to add a bunch of ghosts into my skeleton based undead army. Ghosts being both fast to paint and look pretty cool. So here are the basic guys. They are allot faster than skeletons but pack a good punch and stick around so it worked out quite well.

Banshee:

Along with the basic guys its fun to have some thematic heroes so I added first a banshee. Who was slow and her scream is kind short ranged so not great it turns out but kinda fun.

Knight of Shrouds:

Secondly a Knight of Shrouds. Had this model for awhile because it's cool so good excuse to paint it.Had delayed that due to not knowing what to do other than not painting it black. Stole this ghost + red shroud from the internet and went with it.

Still need to add the now and blood + rust but basically got it done.

Wraith:

Was still playing with some list options so I got a wraith as well. Same deal re the effects. You can only have 4 heroes so I never got to use this guy. Probably would have been better than the banshee in retrospect thou.

Cruel Seas:

It's not all ghosts thou I also painted up my half of the Cruel Seas starter, the British. Planning to try some Games with Duncan in the new year. These ships look nice and are super easy to do. MAkes for a great side project. Have a few more bits to finish probably early in the new year.

Warmaster Elves:

Finally for today some 10mm fantasy stuff. I ahve been collecting up warmaster sets for a bit, finally got around to painting a few of them. Mostly just for fun / nostalgia for the old Warhammer Fantasy game.

Pledge Status, 2018:

Bought: 406
Painted: 342
Total: -64

Never quite held on to that positive number but not to bad.

Thanks;
Mike

Tournament Report - Age of Signat

Hello All;

Yesterday I got the chance to go to a warhammer Age if Sigmar tournament ar Sword and Steel in St. John's. I took an undead army as it was that least painting work for me to get the min points.

We only had 3 people but every one played everyone else so it was pretty fun regardless.

We pulled an objective card for the day and got points for number of kills. Which is bad for me as the undead are all about regenerating! So more guys to kill.

Game 1: vs Stormcast Eternals

Turn 1 I started advancing, no shooting g fo me so I need to close in.

The storm cast had their flying angel jerks fall back from my faster ghosts and concentrate on a skeleton flank.

Batyle continues. Storm cast retained the initiative and destroyed 1 set of skeletons.

But I brought them back and with lucky charges got into a few good fights.

Now I got to go twice and dunked down winning my first assaults doing good damage. I am pretty far behind on poi ts thou.

More fighting, I am doing good on the right flank but still allot of Angel's on the left.

The Angel's fall back and throw more sticks.

In the end I did pretty good on killing, but a ton of skeletons died so j am way behind on points!

Game 2: Stormcast Eternals vs kharadron Overlords (sky dwarves)

Now 2 fast shooting armies face off in the rain. The sky dwarfs have a good first punch but are taking allot of casualties.

Storm casts dominate the center bug it's very close on points.

But the big ship goes down and the Stormcast win. So that puts the on top fir the tournament.

We played the last game anyway for fun. But I forgot to take pictures. The sky dwarves flew I to the middle of my army and failed to snipe out my leader. The got crushed by a tidal wave of skeletons.

Anyway was a great tournament, good to try out some GW fantasy games again after a long time!

Thanks;
Mike
