Cold Wars 2020 - Part 1

Hello Folks,

Back from Cold Wars, attendance seemed a bit down but was still pretty successful.

Big event for day 1 was a pick up game of Saga Age of Magic! Got the chance to try put my new pointy elves in a game.

We just played a simple scenario with cautious, and subjugation. Basically 5 turns of murder with bonus points for the most units alive.

I was facing off against the dreaded dark elves.

I took 18 levy archers, static warmachine, mounted hearthguard, a double sized unit of heavy weapon hearthguard, wizard and warlord.

Heres the set up. Basically archers in front hearthguard behind. Hoping to get some fatigues on the big besties to start.

Dark Elves advance with a mighty War Hydra leading the way

On my turn I fire off lots of shots wounding the hydra and chopping off a few warriors, then put up an elemental shield on the archers.

Dark elves press on getting ready to charge next turn

With the Witch Elves leaping forward to fight the archers. But limited casualties due to the shield, and their closing fire.

Next turn for me the mage throws up a max level elemental Barrie on the knights. Who charge in and kill the cold one knights, weaked by war machine fire, with out loss.

The dark elves send some creatures to smash the war machine but with incredibly bad luck somehow fail. The warriors do better however pushing back and killing allot of archers on the right.

Seeing their moment the Swordmasters charge the Dark Elf Sorceress and cut her to ribbons. While withering fire kills more warriors. And a creature.

The Dark Elves try to counter, with their warlord killing the last of the Silverhelms. On my turn the swordmasters are able to kill most of the warriors, and the war machine drowns the creature I think.

Pretty clear win for the High Elves. I think the Dark Elves struggled a bit due to using the  Hordes board which is bit lack luster in my experience. But it was a very good game. Was great to get the new elves into a fight, especially against their most hated brethren!

Anyway here's a few shots of random tables throughout the con which I found interesting.

Huge Test of Honour set up

Rice!

Old west chariot race, I think using gas lands

WW2

Boats

More Boats

Neat terrain

Always great terrain from these Carnage Guys

That spot right there

Heavy Gear!

That one Martian game

ArnHeim (Say with German Accent to annoy Chris)

More Saga, think the Dark Elves are recessing command structure

Part 2 coming soon, probably tomorrow.

Thanks;
Mike

Battle Report - ADLG

Hello Folks,

This past Sunday  was tine for some more gaming. Duncan and Ben wanted to practice a game of Art de la Gurere for the tournament.

They had 300 points of Alexander's army vs my Roman's with Dacian allies.

Heres the set up. We have the legions on the left, allies on the right. Alexander has a bunch of pike facing the Roman's with some light stuff to tie up the allies.

Alexander marches straight in.

We take  A more measured approach. But the pikes are always eager to charge as you can see!

The lines clash. First round goes pretty even. All things considered.

Main lines fully in battle now,  even the Daciams are getting close to fighting. We are loosing the cavalry fight, but luckily ended up anchored by the field. Had allot of lucky rolls this turn so it swung back to us a bit.

Time for the Dacians to flank. Both main lines are pretty beat up at this point with lots of disruptions.

Units start breaking. Things are looking a bit grim. But we are holding them off for now. The Dacians are well into on the right.

A mounted Roman general has to fight off the elite pikes!

But he wins and kills them! We are getting some lucky fights and pushing back.

But its not enough and the pikes smash through our lines, breaking our army.

Was a fun game actually decently close. I realized at the end the Roman's have armour we could have benefited from saving a few hits. Probably would have made it even closer, need to remember that for next time!

Off to Cold Wars in a few days so look forward to that coverage.

Thanks;
Mike

Battle Report - Napoleonics

Hello All,

Time for another Wednesday wargaming battle Report!

This week we are playing a small Napelonic battle. I dont have that much painted honestly, so we were limited by that.

No real scenario just go have a fight and see how it goes. Prussians  vs French with me as the Prussians.

I just set up in massed formation, while the French were set to march.

Advancing up, french shake out into lines.

Next turn move into close range ready for some vollies. I expanded my 2 Landwher unit to shoot, and kept the good units massed for a charge, the cavalry just faced each other

After some close action, units just taking turns hammering each other and rallying. Charging turned out pretty ineffective.

French decide to mass and try some charges.

Finally able to break the first French unit, but they quickly break a Landwher infantry. The the French cav breaks mine. But a lucky artillery shot sees them off as well.

This left us with 2 on 3, and the Prussians were much more fresh. So the French packed it in.

We decided to call it a bloody draw, or perhaps minor advantage to Prussia.

Thanks;
Mike

Painting Update - High Elves

Hello Folks,

Finished off the second wave of pointy  elves,  making good progress with this! Still have allot of stuff to do as well, but with Cangames coming up I bay have to work on some other projects as well.

Bolt Thrower:

First up I have an old metal bolt thrower. This another model that was sprayed white and in  my bits box for probably a decade almost. Sadly lost the leaver but I d9nt think it's to noticable.

More Archers:

Next a second unit of 10 archers. Mixed in some of the old metal ones this time for a bit of variety. Last group had a champion so figured I'd do a musician this time. Maybe a banner for the next 10 who knows.

Silverhelms:

A unit of 5 knights is for sure the main attraction of this wave. Really love this models. This is a set I always wanted to paint but could never get myself to do cavalry last time I was doing elves.

Army Shot:

And here a shot if the army so far! Have a legal list bow of around 700 points I think, so time to start looking for a game!

Next painting goals are a mounted BSB, Reavers, and maybe a chariot. Have a plastic bolt thrower as well, may do that just because it's easy!

Pledge Status, 2020:

Bought: 101
Painted: 60
Total: -41

Battle Report - Team Yankee

Hello All,

This past weekend we had the next club day. This time it was the final round of our ongoing Team Yankee campaign.

I took my usual allotment of French but mixed it with Pattons. Had to face off against the standard Russian list with tins of everything.

Scenario was Dust Up, as I vetoed Free for All!

Heres the set up, French bottom left, Russians top right. I used spearhead to get a few guys on the flank up top.

Russians had to move first, not much action as they counted as moving, but advanced into better positions.

My turn I called in the sky heroes. My AMX-30 RC were able to kill most of the missile AA, and the Gazelles jumped on the shilka. This left my planes free to cluster bomb the Russians real good.

Next turn the Russians did more shooting, but hard awful luck, and just managed a kill or 2. I was able to keep up the pressure with the Mirages and bombed a bunch of transports. Otherwise getting ready for potential reserves.

Russian reserves came as expected and started causing problems!

But the Mirages certainly to the rescue again. Otherwise killing what I can, if I can keep up the pace it's looking good. Sadly no reserves again.

Guess I missed some pictures, but Russians kept getting reserves and chipping away at the French. I got a few patrons at the end, but it was a bit late. Eventually the T-64s came on and broke the back of the French. With the Americans as allies it was a loss for France.

Thanks;
Mike
